Using A Laptop For My Main Business Computer

by Delmus

I have a laptop that I have found is much faster and convenient to use than my desktop. Most of my business files and work is now being done on this unit, and my concern is overheating, and dust.

On my desktop, I vacuum it out every quarter or so, and it stays on 24/7 to run backups/virus scans/etc. in the evening time.

I've been leaving my laptop on to do the same things, but am concerned about it overheating, and I don't really want to crack it open for a good cleaning. I don't know if it's even necessary.

What's your thoughts? Am I setting myself up for a laptop lobotomy?

Any time you're using any computer as a business computer, backup. If you need help backing up, check out our computer backup section so we can keep your information safe.

There are some disadvantages to using a laptop or a desktop computer. You won't get something as custom when you get a desktop. Generally, a computer is more reliable than a laptop, all things equal. You also can upgrade a desktop much easier than a laptop.

The advantage of a laptop is simple, portability.

A couple of tips that will help your laptop live its longest. Run it only when you use it. Heat is just a nasty element that is part of packing so much in a small package. Try and do updates manually so you don't have to run it 24/7. When cleaning, use compressed air, vacuums create a lot of static electricity, one spark can make a paper weight. I've personally had to learn this lesson the hard way. Any time you run the laptop, try and use a hard surface, it's what the air flow of a laptop was designed for. A couch pillow, or rug floor can quite easily limit the air flow causing a meltdown.

The conclusion, I see nothing wrong with using a laptop as a business computer, just make sure you always backup regularly, and keep performing regular cleanings.
