Building the Perfect PC on a Budget

Everyone thinks building the perfect PC is possible, but few people actually do the research that is required to make it happen.  To make this happen, there are several  different concepts you need to understand.  Then with the appropriate research based on your needs, we can put together a perfect PC that is tailor made to exactly what you need.

What will I use this computer for?

One of the most important things to think about is the programs you are going to be running.  If running the latest games is important, you'll need to set aside a good chunk of money for a video card.  Video editing however requires less video card, and more system resources.  More RAM and CPU will make this computer better.

For smaller applications, checking email, using Facebook, that kind of thing, you can simply just check benchmarks, and spend money to stay in a budget.

If you run larger files, anything over 300mb, or like to multi task, extra RAM will help make the most of your computer.  Currently, 8GB is something I would consider a starting point for a gaming computer, or for video editing.  If all you do is work with really large files, a RAID computer is something you should also consider.

Features, what features, like dolby surround or 3 ethernet ports, what kinds of thing do you need and want.  Make a note of these and come back to them when you are looking up your parts.  Don't forget, you're building the perfect PC, it's gotta have everything that you want.

Check out the Benchmarks

Not all components have benchmarks, but the ones that really will change the way that your computer work do.  The parts of a computer that have benchmarks are, the hard drive, the video card, and the CPU.  Basically here, when you find a part you really like, you look up a benchmark, if it's low on the list, chances are you can get a better performance part for less money.

Using the reviews to help steer you in the right direction will really help take some of the time out of picking the components.

Find and read Reviews

Although it sounds simple, this is one of the best things you can do to make sure you get great computer parts.  This coupled with benchmarking are the 2 key ingredients in building the perfect PC.

People will most certainly tell you if a computer part is the best thing they've ever used, if it's okay, or if it's something that should be given away to a bad cousin.  Typically, I look for a part in the price range I'm looking at that gets great reviews, then I check to see where it benchmarks, if it's a key component.

If I find a part that I think will cost less that scores more on the benchmarks, I check the reviews.  If the reviews for that part are also good, and the benchmark score is higher, you've found a better part.
